Database Content

The "Measures.net.nz" Database was established in 1996 and was designed to collect a wide range of credible, publicly available data for the 74 District and City Councils in New Zealand (TLA's).

All data sources (listed hereafter) are considered (or have proven from experience to be) reliable. Most is subject to audit scrutiny or is reviewed by knowledgeable professionals. All data is updated as far as possible annually. Where data is not available on an annual basis some surrogate or adjustment factors are applied to improve its currency. All data (except for "Regional" economic growth stats) are on a District or City boundary basis. Considerable time and effort is involved in obtaining this "district" related data.

New Zealand District Council Annual Plans and Annual reports provide the major proportion of the data collected. The reliability and consistency of this data is "High" as it is audited and subjected to public scrutiny. From enquiries, surveys and studies assisted by the management and staff of co-operating councils.
Statistics New Zealand provides Official reports that are produced at a District Council level. These reports are either "subscribed to" or "free to the public".
Quotable Value (Valuation) New Zealand provides us with special purpose reporting of the valuation data it holds relating to all NZ TLA's.
Transfund New Zealand annual "Roading Statistics" taken from their Annual report.
National Banks 'quarterly economic surveys' provides useful economic data including Regional Economic growth figures.
Various directory services such as "Local Government Online Ltd" (LGOL) and "New Zealand Local Government Contacts" (LG Contacts), which are sources for a variety of information including employee numbers and committee structures.
Office of the Controller and Auditor-General (OAG) Annual Audit Reports.
Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand (ICANZ) "Sustainability" practice guidelines.

The charts below only go up to 2005. The data for the period 2006-2011 is to the same standard as the 2005 column.

The data has been extracted from council annual financial statements. Whilst every care has been taken to 'match like with like' variability of council account coding render this 'a difficult assignment'. Some items are not always exactly comparable.
